Things are not status quo with the Irondale Winter Guards this season. First of all the word is now Guards not Guard as we have had 3 Winter Color Guards this winter for the first time ever!

Irondale Middle School Guard 2010
New to the winter scene was the
Irondale Middle School Color Guard which performed at both the drumline and color guard shows at the Winter Music of the Knight. The crowds seemed to really like the enthusiasm and fun the 14 members were having fun as they performed to “Jump” by VanHalen using the popular Glee version of the famous 1980’s tune. They were instructed by the Irondale Open Guard seniors and captains with direction by staff member Becky Gallagher.

The fourteen 6-8th grade middle schoolers wore black, purple and red velvet uniforms and performed on a red floor. This group only had 6 rehearsals but put together very enjoyable and entertaining performances. Congratulations to the Middle School Color Guard on their inaugural season!!! Look for more of them in the future!

Irondale A Class Guard 2010
The Irondale A Class Winter Guard is back after a 14 year hiatus. The 2010 program entitled Viva La Vida with music of the same name by Coldplay has become a favorite in the local North Star Color Guard Circuit. In their first show the 17 member A Guard placed third in A Class out of 8 guards, showing they will be a group you will need to contend with this season. The show is receiving good marks in design and performance and with the team’s ever growing talent their execution scores will continue to move up as well. More importantly, it seems to be a crowd pleaser and entertainment is what it is all about!

Irondale Open Class Guard 2010
The Irondale Open Winter Guard is in its 21st season and is off to a very successful season. The 10 member guard is competing at a very high level this year with their show entitled “If You Live Through This…” with music by Stars. The program shows off the strength and talent of this talented group with difficult movement and equipment passages. The group is entering a stage an Irondale guard has not entered since about 2004 which is very exciting.

Both high school groups just returned from the WGI Kansas City Regional where the A Class guard was up against 30 guards with national experience and had a very good performance which placed them 18th overall. The Open Guard went head to head with another nationally ranked Scholastic Open guard and took a first place trophy at the national regional! Congratulations to both guards on a great showing at Kansas City. Both were well received by the savvy audience which is a feat in and of itself.

Look for the guards at these upcoming competitions.

2010 Irondale Winter Color Guard to expand programs!!!!!!

3 Guards for 2010!

If you’ve thought about
doing guard this is the season
for you!!!!!!

The 2010 edition of the Irondale Winter Guard is taking shape.  This year we are trying something we haven’t done in a while but feel the need to do again.   We are planning on having multiple color guards for this winter.  What does that mean?  There seems to be increased interest in marching this winter.  We are doing something different this season to accommodate the potential increase in membership. Because of the large freshman class this fall and the additional interest of the middle schoolers at massed band; we are planning 3 Winter Guards this year!

The Irondale Winter Color Guard, in its 20th year of competition, won Minnesota State Championships in the Scholastic Open Class on March 28, 2009.

The Irondale Winter Color Guard traveled to Dayton, Ohio to compete in the WGI (Winter Guard International) Color Guard World Championships for the second time after taking a three year hiatus on April 2-4. The guard had a respectable showing placing 25th in Scholastic Open Class.

Winter Color Guard is an indoor performance art activity that is similar to theatrical dance productions, but utilizes flags, and other twirling apparatuses to take the performance art aspect to a more visually intense level. Winter Color Guard is an intensely physical activity, and is called "Sport of the Arts" by its governing organization, WGI (Winter Guard International).

After the fall marching band season, all students have the option of joining the Irondale Winterguard. This group is open to any student registered at Irondale or Mounds View High Schools; music membership not required. The winterguard develops an exciting production to taped music, which enables the members to further their Colorguard experience in this unique indoor pageantry art. The winterguard will compete in eight to ten shows during the months of January through late March or early April

Depending on the number of students interested each year, Irondale may open auditions to students from surrounding communities.

The Irondale Winterguard is an activity associated with the North Star Color Guard Circuit in Minnesota and Winter Guard International (WGI) nationally. They were the Scholastic Open division Gold Medalists at the 2002 Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships!!
